Sr. Backend Engineer

Role overview

As a senior backend engineer on a platform team, you’ll improve the shared services, APIs, and engineering workflows that support a range of operational and customer-facing products. The role combines hands-on backend development with production ownership and practical use of AI coding tools, with a focus on making other engineering teams more effective and keeping systems dependable.

Responsibilities

- Improve backend systems and internal tooling, and build shared services, libraries, and APIs used by other teams. - Find repetitive or fragile engineering work and automate it, using AI agents where they add value. - Triage security issues and deliver dependency upgrades safely across an established codebase. - Investigate performance constraints, scalability concerns, concurrency, and failure modes across services and integrations. - Monitor and support production services, diagnose incidents to their root cause, and make lasting fixes. - Share effective AI-assisted development practices and review generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability.

Requirements

- At least five years of professional backend development with Java, including shipping and operating production systems. - Strong system design and backend fundamentals, including API design, integrations, concurrency, and service reliability. - Deep understanding of database modeling, query design, indexing, and performance. - Ability to debug complex production problems and make safe, incremental changes in an existing codebase. - Regular experience using AI coding tools in a production workflow, with sound judgment about reviewing and owning their output. - Clear communication, including explaining technical decisions, surfacing gaps, and constructively challenging unclear requirements.

Nice to have

- Experience with B2B SaaS, multi-tenant data, transactional workflows, platform engineering, or internal tools. - Familiarity with JavaScript or TypeScript and frontend development; interest in Elixir or functional programming. - Experience on a small engineering team or in travel, hospitality, or experience-focused products.
