Microsoft offers employees a supported route out
Microsoft introduced a new Voluntary Exit Offer on October 26, giving eligible employees the option to leave the company with financial support and career planning resources. The company said the offer is time limited and voluntary. It is the first such program of its kind at Microsoft, according to Chief People Officer Amy Coleman’s announcement to employees.
Microsoft did not describe the offer as a companywide reduction. Coleman said it is available in participating organizations, and that some teams are taking part while others are not. The company says the choice gives workers considering an exit more control over when they leave, while giving participating units another way to adjust staffing.
Four countries are covered, but team participation varies
The offer is available to eligible employees at level 70 and below in participating teams in the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom. Microsoft said workers would receive an email with the details. That means location and seniority alone do not guarantee an offer. The employee’s organization must also be included.
TechCrunch reported that around 60,000 employees could be eligible, citing Microsoft’s confirmation and the internal memo. The figure describes the potential reach of the program, not a target number of departures. Microsoft has not said how many workers it expects to accept.
The terms and expected departures remain unclear
TechCrunch reported that the buyout terms will be similar to Microsoft’s standard severance. The company’s public memo promises financial support and career planning resources but does not give a payment formula or explain how long employees have to decide. Microsoft said eligible workers would receive individual terms by email.
The announcement builds on Microsoft’s voluntary retirement program earlier this year, but this offer reaches employees below the retirement age threshold. Coleman said the company will learn from the new program. Until workers receive their details, its practical effect will depend on which teams participate and how many employees decide the support is enough to make a move.
