Performance Engineer

Role overview A fully remote software engineering role dedicated to lifting systems performance across every layer of the stack, from raw hardware through operating system kernels, hypervisors, and guest environments all the way up to user-facing applications. The engineer is expected to treat performance as a first-class concern: tracing bottlenecks wherever they hide, sketching fixes of any size, and building the measurement infrastructure that makes regression and improvement visible.

Responsibilities - Investigate performance limiters across hardware, kernel, hypervisor, guest OS, and application layers using rigorous, data-intensive methods. - Prototype improvements ranging from small surgical fixes to large-scale rewrites or entirely new subsystems. - Contribute to and maintain performance-critical code written primarily in Rust and C across systems of varying ages. - Build custom tooling and infrastructure where off-the-shelf profilers, tracers, and analyzers fall short. - Model the performance impact of architectural and component decisions across diverse hardware configurations.

Requirements - Demonstrated experience shipping production software in Rust, C, or another systems-oriented language. - Hands-on fluency with tracing and observability tooling such as DTrace, eBPF, snoop, tcpdump, truss, or strace. - Track record of designing and implementing custom diagnostic tools when existing ones are insufficient. - Deeply analytical mindset with a passion for hunting slow or broken code and replacing it with cleaner, faster alternatives. - Comfort working across the full stack, from low-level hardware considerations up through high-level application behavior.

Nice to have - Background in hypervisor internals, host operating systems, block storage services, embedded operating systems, or control plane development. - Experience modeling workload behavior against different CPU, memory, or I/O architectures.
