Role overview
A remote software engineering role focused on developing and maintaining a Rust-based virtual machine monitor and its illumos-based host operating system. The position sits at the intersection of systems programming, hardware integration, and open-source development, supporting virtualized workloads on a proprietary compute platform. The VMM is a fresh implementation drawing on the bhyve hypervisor lineage.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with an experienced team to design, build, and bring up host system software, in-kernel virtualization, and user-space VMM components on current and next-generation compute hardware - Write and review code in Rust, C, and/or microprocessor assembly, with all output published as open source - Build a working understanding of microprocessors through deep familiarity with documentation, hands-on interaction with real hardware, and original written material where vendor references fall short - Contribute to system security and resiliency by designing for failure from inception, while participating in rigorous code review to keep the software production-ready - Take a customer-focused perspective when scoping and delivering end-to-end features across the platform - Influence the design of new hardware and software components beyond the immediate virtualization layer
Requirements
- Familiarity with operating system internals or virtualization concepts and comfort in C, Rust, or comparable low-level systems languages - Versatility spanning core OS architecture, hardware interfaces, networking, and virtual device development - Prior hands-on experience inside hypervisors such as KVM, Hyper-V, bhyve, or comparable projects - Comfort solving open-ended architectural problems from first principles - Ability to interface cleanly with diverse hardware, embedded firmware, and third-party components
