Operating System Networking Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview A software engineering role focused on the networking layer of an illumos-based host operating system. The position spans firmware through kernel code, working alongside teams developing custom compute sleds, a proprietary rack-scale switch, and a cabled backplane. The engineer contributes to a fully open-source codebase, pursuing functionality unlocked only through tight hardware and software co-design.
Responsibilities - Design, build, and bring up host operating system software with particular emphasis on the networking subsystems - Develop and enhance device drivers for merchant silicon NICs, switching silicon, and FPGA-based NICs - Write C code across the operating system, Rust code for a packet transformation engine and related components, and potentially some P4 - Improve performance of the lowest layers of the networking stack through better use of hardware offloads, software rearchitecture, and targeted implementation refinements - Partner with hardware and firmware teams on features that depend on co-design between silicon and system software - Contribute all code produced to public open-source repositories
Requirements - Solid grasp of operating systems networking concepts - Comfort programming in C and/or Rust at a systems level - Hands-on experience with networks at the hardware layer and with operating systems at the network layer - Enthusiasm for writing operating system kernel code that exposes and enables networking hardware features - Drive to push networks to line rate through rigorous analysis and, when needed, novel architectural choices
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote position - Compensation of $275,000 USD annually, set regardless of geographic location - Premium healthcare with 100% of medical PPO, dental, and vision premiums covered for employees and dependents - Flexible working hours - Workday must overlap with Pacific Time for at least four hours - All produced code is open source
