Role overview
A fully remote engineering position focused on low-level operating system kernel development for a host OS purpose-built for modern server hardware. The work spans the full stack from the processor's first instruction through device drivers, hypervisor integration, and virtual machine support, with all written code released as open source. The team prizes architectural autonomy, first-principles problem solving, and tight collaboration with hardware.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and bring up host system software on current and future server platforms, working closely with hardware and firmware counterparts - Write production code in C for the core kernel, in Rust for select in-kernel components and higher-level services, and in microprocessor assembly where needed - Study processor documentation, probe real hardware directly, and author internal reference material when vendor docs are incomplete or inaccurate - Build for resilience and security from the ground up, treating failure as a first-class design concern - Participate in a rigorous peer code review process and keep the codebase production-ready at all times - Contribute to architectural decisions spanning OS, firmware, hypervisor, and adjacent platform components
Requirements
- Hands-on experience with operating system kernel development - Proficiency in C, with working knowledge of Rust and/or microprocessor assembly - Comfort moving between core OS architecture, hardware interfaces, networking, and device bring-up - Ability to reason from first principles when documentation is missing or wrong - Track record of debugging complex low-level problems to completion - Customer-oriented mindset applied to end-to-end feature development
