Remote job
Senior Nuclear Criticality Safety Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview Establish and carry out criticality safety evaluations for a facility that processes used nuclear fuel. The role covers hazard identification, analysis of normal and credible abnormal conditions, and development of the technical and programmatic basis used to control criticality risks. It also supports facility safety documentation and licensing.
Responsibilities - Identify and assess nuclear criticality hazards across fuel cycle processes and facility scenarios. - Perform evaluations demonstrating subcriticality under normal and credible abnormal conditions. - Develop a criticality code validation report and document analysis methods and supporting technical evidence. - Define controlled parameters and management measures for the criticality safety program, including application of the double-contingency principle. - Contribute to the criticality accident alarm system and inadvertent criticality emergency response planning. - Support safety basis development and licensing with clear technical documentation.
Requirements - Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, or a related field. - At least five years performing criticality safety evaluations as part of a nuclear facility safety basis. - Knowledge of criticality physics, nuclear science, and chemistry. - Understanding of fuel cycle processes and potential accident scenarios in fuel cycle facilities. - Ability to communicate technical analysis clearly and work through evolving, open-ended problems.
Nice to have Experience with used fuel recycling and ten or more years conducting evaluations for a licensed fuel cycle facility. Familiarity with tools such as Attila4MC, MCNP, SCALE, or Serpent; critical experiments; and applicable criticality codes, standards, and regulatory guidance is valuable.
