Safety Analysis Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Help develop the safety basis for a first-of-its-kind used nuclear fuel recycling facility. The role evaluates hazards and potential accidents, identifies safety-related items and measures, and supports radiological, subcriticality, chemical, and fire safety programs. It combines regulatory documentation and quantitative analysis with collaboration across a fast-moving engineering environment.
Responsibilities - Develop and maintain safety-basis documents in line with applicable nuclear regulator requirements and guidance. - Support integrated safety analysis, criticality safety evaluations, fire hazard analysis, and natural phenomena hazard analysis. - Identify and assess radiological, criticality, chemical, fire, and natural phenomena hazards, including potential accident sequences. - Calculate deterministic consequence severity for radiological or chemical source terms and doses, and assess likelihood using qualitative or semi-quantitative methods. - Identify items relied on for safety to prevent or mitigate accidents and develop management measures to support their availability and reliability. - Communicate technical results clearly in writing and verbally, and contribute thoughtful solutions when problems lack established processes.
Requirements - Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical, nuclear, or related engineering; a master’s degree or doctorate is desirable. - 3–5 years of experience in nuclear safety, process safety, or a similar high-hazard field. - Experience with Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP) and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) as process hazard analysis methods. - Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills. - Ability to learn quickly, work independently in an iterative environment, and exercise sound critical and creative judgment.
Nice to have
Experience developing safety bases for licensed fuel-cycle facilities; consequence analysis tools such as RADTRAD, MELCOR/MACCS, ARCON, or PAVAN; event-tree or fault-tree analysis; and familiarity with relevant regulatory guidance, including NUREG-1513, NUREG-1520, or NUREG-1718.
