Remote job
Lead Device Software Engineer, Embedded & Firmware
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Own the architecture and delivery of device software for an energy interface that monitors electrical conditions, controls relays, performs safety checks, and communicates with connected devices and cloud services. This hands-on technical lead will set direction for a small firmware team, delegate well-scoped work, and continue writing and reviewing production code. The work spans data acquisition, real-time control, communications, system integration, safety, and secure firmware updates.
Responsibilities
- Define the device software architecture, break complex requirements into clear workstreams, and guide implementation while contributing code. - Design and implement safety-critical software, define its safety boundary, and own failure analysis, safety documentation, and certification work. - Develop revenue-grade metering, including signal acquisition, processing, and calibration, and work with electrical engineers on board bring-up and hardware design. - Build reliable communications and integration across device interfaces, fault handling, logging, security, and firmware update mechanisms. - Establish a secure firmware release path, including code signing and verified over-the-air updates. - Lead technical reviews, delegate work with clear interfaces, and troubleshoot timing or hardware-software issues using lab tools.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science, plus at least seven years of firmware engineering experience and a record of shipping products at scale. - Strong embedded programming skills in C, C++, and/or Rust, with deep bare-metal or RTOS experience on modern 32-bit microcontrollers such as ARM Cortex-M. - Experience debugging embedded hardware with tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG or SWD. - Ability to lead technical direction, partition work for others, and remain hands-on with implementation. - Strong system design and documentation skills, including the ability to drive safety certification to completion. - Ability to use AI coding tools responsibly while retaining ownership of, and being able to explain, shipped design decisions; sound judgment about iteration speed and effort.
Nice to have
A master’s degree; prior safety-critical software certification; experience with Matter or Thread commissioning, embedded networking, WireGuard, multi-threaded RTOS applications, firmware signing or PKI, and protocols such as I2C, UART, SPI, CAN, or Ethernet. Familiarity with relevant electrical safety, cybersecurity, or metering standards is also useful.
Benefits and work setup
Full-time benefits listed include health insurance with 75% of premiums covered for employees and eligible family members, flexible paid time off, a 401(k) with company match, and stock options.
