Sr. Staff Software Development Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview This senior, hands-on engineering role is embedded with business teams to convert ambiguous, high-stakes ideas into secure, production-grade AI solutions across retrieval, structured and unstructured data, and agentic workflows. The position combines architecture, deep implementation, and advisory work, while also shaping the engineering standards and playbooks the wider applied AI team relies on.
Responsibilities - Partner with business leaders and product owners from discovery through delivery to map workflows, identify high-value AI opportunities, shape roadmaps, and advise on technical feasibility, cost, and risk. - Design and ship secure, production-grade AI solutions spanning retrieval-augmented generation, structured data querying, unstructured data mining, and agentic workflows integrated with systems of record. - Apply a product-ownership mindset by establishing monitoring and evaluation frameworks, implementing least-privilege access, and managing ROI, cost attribution, and support plans. - Set engineering standards by expanding reusable building blocks, reference architectures, skills, and engineering playbooks while mentoring teammates.
Requirements - 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 3 years working directly on AI or ML projects. - Hands-on experience with modern AI architecture components such as retrieval methods, reusable skill development, agentic orchestration, Model Context Protocol integration, and agent-to-agent frameworks. - Proven track record of collaborating directly with business stakeholders to run discovery, translate ambiguous needs into actionable plans, and communicate trade-offs around risk, cost, performance, and architecture. - Demonstrated experience securing AI systems and underlying data, including least-privilege access controls and defenses against prompt injection, data leakage, and non-compliant outputs. - Strong engineering foundation across relevant languages and tooling, with experience applying techniques like LLM-as-judge or large-scale AI quality regression testing.
Benefits and work setup - On-site role in San Jose, California, or remote within the United States, reporting to the Manager of Applied AI Engineering. - Full-time position with a published base pay range of $180,000–$225,000 USD, plus benefits covering health plans, paid time off, parental leave, retirement options, and education reimbursement.
