About this role

Role overview

This is a Staff-level engineering role focused on designing and building a next-generation Data Platform from the ground up. The position sets the technical vision for data infrastructure spanning real-time streaming, analytics, and AI/ML workloads, and partners with engineering, product, and senior leadership across the organization. It is a high-impact, hands-on architectural role suited to an experienced data engineering leader who still enjoys writing production-grade code.

Responsibilities

- Design and implement a next-generation data platform supporting batch and real-time integrations, advanced analytics, and multiple data types - Architect solutions in partnership with engineering, product, and senior leadership, aligning technical strategy with product goals - Define and maintain guidelines for data ingestion, creation, enrichment, and storage; oversee ETL processes and data warehousing - Develop end-to-end solutions across the tech stack, setting the example for engineering excellence - Provide mentorship and direction that fosters continuous improvement and innovation - Partner with Security, Compliance, and Legal teams to ensure adherence to data protection standards - Champion high availability and fault tolerance through monitoring, alerting, and incident response practices - Drive architectural decisions, evaluate build-versus-buy trade-offs, and contribute to multi-phase roadmaps - Collaborate with data scientists and machine learning teams to evolve infrastructure for advanced analytics and AI initiatives

Requirements

- 8+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or related roles, with at least 5 years at the Principal Engineer level - Proven track record designing and operating large-scale data infrastructure in a complex, fast-paced environment - Deep experience across Kafka and its ecosystem (e.g., Kafka Streams, Confluent Platform), ClickHouse, Tinybird, Snowflake, and broader big data frameworks - Proficiency in cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure and their associated big data services - Strong background in data governance and security, including regulatory compliance and protection of sensitive information - Outstanding communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders - Demonstrated leadership mindset with experience mentoring teams, driving consensus, and advocating for best practices

Nice to have

- Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field - Industry recognition or notable contributions in data engineering, such as published works or open-source contributions

- San Francisco, CA base pay range of $232,000–$348,000, with potential adjustment based on location - Total compensation package may include benefits, equity-based compensation, and eligibility for a company bonus or variable pay program
