About this role
Role overview
Join the Consumer Engineering organization as a Product Backend Engineer focused on building and scaling the products millions of users engage with daily. This role sits at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems and core user journeys, partnering directly with product managers, designers, data scientists, machine learning engineers, and client engineers to deliver features that shape how people discover, join, and interact with content. The position is centralized across multiple high-impact teams spanning core product and feeds, community and presence, growth and engagement, monetization and conversion, and identity and security.
Responsibilities
- Translate product and user needs into reliable, low-latency technical solutions in close collaboration with product, design, data, and client teams across iOS, Android, and Web - Own the end-to-end software lifecycle for major initiatives, from technical design documents and API contracts through development, testing, rollout, and observability - Design, build, and evaluate A/B experiments using tools like BigQuery, HEX, or Firebase to analyze user behavior, conversion funnels, and retention loops - Build and maintain scalable APIs (GraphQL, REST, gRPC) and distributed backend services optimized for client consumption and consumer UI performance - Establish engineering best practices, improve developer workflows, mentor teammates, and use modern AI-integrated tools to ship high-quality products efficiently
Requirements
- Three or more years of hands-on backend development experience building and operating large-scale distributed serving systems in high-concurrency environments - Proficiency in modern backend languages such as Go or Python (Java, Kotlin, Rust, or C++ also accepted) - Expertise designing and maintaining scalable APIs using GraphQL, REST, or gRPC for native mobile and web applications - Experience with high-throughput caching layers and distributed datastores such as Redis, Cassandra, or PostgreSQL - Strong user-centric mindset with intuition for product usability, interaction design, social dynamics, and growth loops - Comfortable navigating ambiguity in fast-paced product environments, balancing velocity with system reliability, with strong cross-functional communication skills
Nice to have
- Experience or interest in using AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate development workflows - Background partnering with data scientists to design experiments and establish core performance metrics
Benefits and work setup
- Base salary range of $164,000 to $229,000 USD, plus eligibility for equity in the form of restricted stock units; some roles may also be eligible for commission - Comprehensive benefits package for U.S.-based employees including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) program with employer match, generous vacation time off, and parental leave - Fully remote or hybrid team environment depending on location, with the role open to candidates across multiple career levels
