About this role

Role overview

A senior backend engineering position on a centralized consumer engineering organization that builds and scales the products hundreds of millions of people use daily to discover content, participate in communities, and connect with one another. The role sits at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems and core user journeys, partnering directly with product managers, designers, data scientists, machine learning engineers, and frontend engineers to ship, experiment with, and scale features. It hires across several high-impact consumer teams spanning core product and feeds, community and creator tools, growth and engagement, monetization and conversion, and identity and security.

Responsibilities

- Partner with product management, design, data science, and client engineers (iOS, Android, web) to translate user and business needs into reliable, low-latency technical solutions. - Own the full software lifecycle for major product initiatives, from technical design documents and API contracts through development, testing, rollout, and observability. - Design, build, and evaluate A/B experiments, using tools such as BigQuery, HEX, or Firebase to analyze user behavior, conversion funnels, and retention loops. - Build and maintain scalable APIs (GraphQL, REST, gRPC) and distributed backend services optimized for client consumption and consumer UI performance. - Establish engineering best practices, improve developer workflows, mentor teammates, and use AI-integrated tooling to ship high-quality product efficiently.

Requirements

- Five or more years of hands-on backend development experience building and operating large-scale distributed serving systems in high-concurrency environments. - Proficiency in a modern backend language such as Go or Python; Java, Kotlin, Rust, or C++ are also relevant. - Expertise designing and maintaining scalable APIs using GraphQL, REST, or gRPC for native mobile and web applications. - Experience with high-throughput caching layers and distributed datastores such as Redis, Cassandra, or PostgreSQL. - A user-centric mindset with strong intuition for product usability, interaction design, and growth loops. - Comfort navigating ambiguity in fast-paced environments, paired with outstanding cross-functional communication skills.

Nice to have

- Experience or strong interest in using AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate development workflows.

Benefits and work setup

- U.S. base salary range of approximately $190,000 to $267,000, with eligibility for equity in the form of restricted stock units and, depending on the position, commission. - Benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) program with employer match, generous vacation time, and parental leave. - Fully remote or hybrid team environment; select interview stages may be recorded, transcribed, and summarized by AI, with the option to opt out.
