Staff Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview
A Staff Engineer position focused on setting technical strategy across multiple teams and delivering it through hands-on implementation and broad technical leadership. The role owns a multi-team technical roadmap, clears cross-team dependencies before they become bottlenecks, and builds the frameworks and processes that keep teams aligned without constant escalation. The work spans the full stack, from frontend through data infrastructure, and uses that breadth to define service-level expectations and observability standards.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of several significant technical initiatives in parallel, staying hands-on in code and architecture. - Provide technical direction that balances near-term delivery against long-term sustainability, and keep architectural decisions consistent across teams. - Own technical debt as an explicit program: surface what matters, build the business and developer-experience case, and land it in quarterly goals alongside product commitments. - Use internal forums such as architecture office hours, learning sessions, and shared documentation to spread context, reinforce best practices, and keep teams aligned to the roadmap. - Mentor engineers across the department, including senior engineers, in partnership with their managers, and create growth opportunities rather than absorbing the most interesting work. - Act as a quality gatekeeper through active code review and testing strategy, while deliberately developing other engineers into effective reviewers and gatekeepers.
Requirements
- 9+ years of professional experience with a strong record in software development, testing, design, and architecture. - Deep knowledge of a full production stack (frontend, backend, infrastructure, and data), with the ability to reason about how choices in one layer surface as problems in another. - Track record of owning a multi-quarter technical roadmap that spanned more than one team, including securing buy-in from peers and senior leadership and driving it to completion. - Experience managing technical debt as a quantified, prioritized program of work with leadership buy-in. - Hands-on experience designing and operating B2B API integrations, including authentication, rate limiting, retries, idempotency, versioning, and contract evolution. - Track record of mentoring senior engineers through architectural thinking, not only code review. - Experience with CI tooling, Docker, and at least one major cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or GCP). - Experience evaluating and rolling out developer tooling, including AI-assisted development tools, with a clear-eyed view of trade-offs. - Deep Python and Django experience building production services. - A degree in Computer Science or a related field.
Nice to have
- Experience enabling other engineers to take on review and leadership responsibilities through pairing and design review.
Benefits and work setup
- Remote-first working model with flexible location across multiple time zones. - Home office support provided to team members. - Annual company retreats to support connection and collaboration.
