Senior Software Engineer - Remote

Role overview A fully remote opportunity for a senior engineer to lead backend work on a platform accelerating scientific discovery through AI. The role centers on designing resilient services and data systems that power agent-driven research workflows, with the autonomy to shape architecture, raise engineering standards, and mentor teammates.

Responsibilities - Design, build, and own critical backend services including APIs, data pipelines, async workers, and supporting infrastructure at scale. - Make architectural decisions, document trade-offs through ADRs, and drive platform and reliability investments alongside feature delivery. - Diagnose and resolve complex performance, reliability, and scalability issues, conducting post-mortems that prevent recurrence. - Build and operate distributed systems applying patterns such as circuit breakers, retries, idempotency, and rate limiting, with full lifecycle ownership from design through deployment. - Design data models across relational and non-relational stores, build ETL/ELT pipelines and integrations with third-party services, and apply caching strategies thoughtfully. - Mentor engineers through code review and pairing, set standards for code quality and test coverage, and represent engineering in cross-functional conversations.

Requirements - 8+ years of software engineering experience with deep expertise in backend systems, APIs, databases, distributed architectures, and cloud infrastructure. - Strong command of at least one backend language (Python, Go, Java, Rust, or similar) and comfort working across a major cloud platform (AWS, GCP, or Azure). - Hands-on experience with relational databases (schema design, query optimization, indexing) plus familiarity with non-relational or caching layers. - Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines, with a track record of delivering complex projects end-to-end with minimal supervision. - Demonstrated mentoring and technical leadership without formal authority, paired with clear communication that translates trade-offs for both engineers and product partners.

Nice to have - Startup experience scaling systems while the business grows rapidly and wearing many hats in ambiguous environments. - Familiarity with Node.js/TypeScript, AWS Lambda/CDK/Step Functions, PostgreSQL, Cloudflare, or auth systems such as OAuth. - Exposure to workflow orchestration tools (Temporal, Airflow, Prefect), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Pulumi), and cloud cost management.
