About this role
Role overview A Java Software Engineer role focused on developing components of a cross-domain security system within an agile development team. Engineers participate in the full software lifecycle, from understanding change requirements through design, coding, testing, deployment, and support, while engaging directly with the business and domain challenges that drive technical decisions. The position is remote within the UK, with occasional travel to a Bristol office, and supports government-sector clients requiring security clearance.
Responsibilities - Collaborate to understand high-level requirements and investigate technologies to assess fit and applicability. - Develop high-quality code and solve deeply technical issues across the full software lifecycle. - Build tests at every stage, from unit tests through acceptance and performance testing. - Build deployment code and pipelines in consultation with DevOps specialists, and resolve issues escalated from third-line support. - Collaborate in code development and peer review, and contribute to indicative estimating and planning.
Requirements - Solid experience developing software in Java and related technologies, with an agile mindset. - Practical experience with agile practices including TDD, BDD, continuous delivery, DevOps, pair programming, and estimating and planning. - Working knowledge of Spring Boot, AWS services (S3, Fargate, Lambda, SQS/SNS), relational databases with JPA, MongoDB, DynamoDB, REST APIs, RabbitMQ, Docker, Linux, Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins, Git/Bitbucket, GitLab, and Kubernetes. - Eligibility for BPSS clearance and the ability to obtain DV clearance, including meeting UK residency and right-to-work requirements. - Open, honest, and positive attitude with strong collaboration skills.
Nice to have - Experience with OpenShift, Docker Compose or Swarm, and additional scripting languages such as Python, JavaScript, Golang, or Bash.
