Software Engineer, Trust & Safety
Job details
About this role
Role overview This role builds the anti-abuse backbone of a developer-focused email platform, protecting legitimate senders while keeping bad actors out. The work spans real-time enforcement, scalable detection pipelines, and automation that moves from signal to action without waiting on human review. It combines low-latency systems engineering with applied machine learning for spam and phishing detection.
Responsibilities - Build and operate a real-time enforcement layer that decides on every email within a millisecond-scale latency budget. - Design end-to-end pipelines covering signal collection, decisioning, and action across sending, receiving, and account activity. - Author detection rules and policies, and make them safe to evolve without breaking legitimate traffic. - Detect and contain account takeover and leaked API keys, balancing fast response against false positives that lock out real owners. - Attach a clear reason to every block and reversal, enabling measurement of each detector's precision and retirement of harmful rules. - Automate manual workflows such as investigations, appeals, and bulk actions so the team scales with volume. - Build and evaluate machine learning classifiers for spam and phishing, gating them on measured precision before they enforce. - Implement safeguards and keep every action traceable through logs, metrics, and audit trails.
Requirements - Five or more years of software engineering experience building production systems. - Background in anti-abuse, fraud, or security engineering, with a track record of taking classifiers safely to production. - Working knowledge of email fundamentals, including SPF, DKIM, DMARC, bounce handling, complaint feedback, and phishing campaign mechanics. - Database performance tuning experience with Postgres and Redis. - Ability to measure classifier precision and recall rigorously before deployment.
Nice to have - Familiarity with real-time decisioning systems that operate under tight latency constraints. - Experience designing detection rules that can be changed safely in production.
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote position with teammates distributed across the Americas and European time zones. - Occasional travel expected for team offsites, conferences, and meetups. - Compensation range of $150,000 to $175,000 USD, commensurate with location and experience. - High bar for product quality and reliability, with a team culture centered on thoughtful feedback and shared learning.
