Remote job
DV Java Software Engineer (Contract Outside of IR35)
Job details
About this role
Role overview
A contract opportunity for an experienced Java engineer to design and build components of a cross-domain security platform within an agile development team. The work spans the full software development lifecycle — from understanding change requests and shaping solutions, through design, coding, testing, deployment, and ongoing support. Engineers are expected to combine strong technical craft with a genuine grasp of the business and domain problems they are solving.
Responsibilities
- Translate high-level requirements into designs and working code, collaborating with team members to identify the best technical approach. - Investigate candidate technologies and patterns to assess their fit for the platform. - Write high-quality, well-tested Java code and contribute to peer code reviews. - Diagnose and resolve deep technical issues, including 3rd-line support escalations. - Build automated tests at every level — unit, acceptance, and performance — and contribute to deployment pipelines alongside DevOps colleagues. - Take part in agile ceremonies including indicative estimating, planning, and pair programming.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience developing software in Java, ideally with Spring Boot, and exposure to AWS services such as S3, Fargate, Lambda, and SQS/SNS. - Familiarity with relational databases and persistence tooling (for example Postgres or Oracle with JPA), plus NoSQL stores such as MongoDB or DynamoDB. - Practical experience of agile engineering practices including TDD, BDD, continuous delivery, pair programming, and estimating and planning. - Comfort working with Docker, Kubernetes, Linux, and Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform and Ansible, with CI/CD pipelines in Jenkins, GitLab, or Bitbucket. - A proactive, honest, and collaborative mindset, with the ability to investigate problems independently. - Current Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance, and eligibility to meet UK residency and right-to-work requirements for clearance.
Nice to have
- Exposure to OpenShift, Docker Compose or Swarm, or scripting in Python, JavaScript, Golang, or Bash.
Benefits and work setup
- Day rate of £450–£550, outside of IR35. - Primarily remote, with travel to Bristol as required. - The role is subject to successful completion of the relevant UK security screening and clearance process.
