Role overview This role leads the engineering team responsible for growing and strengthening the direct relationship between a major product review and shopping guide publication and its readers. The position oversees front-end engineers who build search discovery, registration, newsletter, and distribution experiences that span the publication and external platforms, and reports into the engineering leadership of the consumer products division.
Responsibilities - Manage five to ten front-end engineers across multiple career levels, providing coaching, mentorship, regular feedback, and career development - Own execution, staffing, technical health, and operational practices for the team - Ensure technical decisions have clear accountability and align with the broader engineering strategy across the organization - Partner with Product, Design, and Data counterparts to shape the roadmap and translate business goals into engineering outcomes - Collaborate across product, editorial, and parent-organization teams to manage dependencies and deliver shared initiatives - Communicate plans, progress, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Requirements - Three or more years of engineering management experience, including hiring, developing, and retaining engineers - Deep expertise in front-end web development, production software operations, and contemporary software delivery practices - Experience managing senior engineers and partnering with staff-level engineers and other senior technical leaders - Proven ability to translate product and business goals into engineering outcomes and make thoughtful cross-organizational tradeoffs - Fluency with AI-assisted software development and its application in engineering workflows
Nice to have - Hands-on experience with TypeScript, React, and GraphQL, plus site performance optimization - Familiarity with experimentation platforms, A/B testing, or other data-informed product development methods - Background collaborating with Data or Analytics teams in a metrics-driven commercial environment - Knowledge of web accessibility, SEO, or emerging search and discovery technologies - Experience shipping or leading the adoption of an AI-powered workflow change within a team
Benefits and work setup Hybrid work from a New York City headquarters approximately two days per week is strongly preferred, though full-time remote applicants will also be considered. Compensation includes a base salary of $185,000–$210,000 USD plus eligibility for an annual bonus and restricted stock, along with medical, dental, and vision benefits, FSAs, a company-matching 401(k), employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation and sick days, paid parental leave, and tuition reimbursement.
