Senior Engineering Manager, Platform Engineering
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Lead a platform engineering team that builds and operates internal tools and services for product engineering teams. The role combines people leadership, hands-on technical judgment, and product management: discover developer needs, shape a platform roadmap, and improve how teams deliver software by reducing infrastructure and tooling friction.
Responsibilities - Hire, coach, and develop platform engineers, encouraging product thinking and empathy for internal customers. - Set the platform vision and roadmap through discovery with engineering teams, and define clear service boundaries. - Document the platform’s offerings, service objectives, support model, and engagement process. - Track delivery and developer experience using measures such as DORA metrics, service objectives, adoption, satisfaction, and self-service use. - Operate the platform with reliability targets, versioning, and on-call support; lead migrations that minimize the burden on product teams. - Evaluate and introduce AI-assisted development tools, then measure their impact.
Requirements - At least 8 years of software engineering experience, including hands-on platform engineering. - 3–5 years leading engineering teams of four or more people. - Demonstrated experience treating an internal platform as a product, including decisions about scope and evidence of adoption or satisfaction. - Experience operating highly available systems in AWS, with knowledge of containers, Terraform, CI/CD, and observability. - Strong architectural and build-versus-buy judgment, with willingness to work directly in code. - Experience using DORA metrics, service objectives, and developer feedback to guide priorities. - Clear communication and ability to influence teams outside your reporting line.
