Sr. PHP Symfony Engineer (Remote, Full-Time) [AR024]

Role overview A senior, hands-on backend engineering position focused on a mature Symfony platform that processes marketing and revenue data for enterprise customers. The work calls for an architect mindset, operating with high autonomy inside a remote, cross-functional product squad alongside engineering, product, QA, and DevOps colleagues. The stack currently runs Symfony 6.1 with a planned upgrade to Symfony 7, an Angular front end, TypeScript services, and Python-based AI agent microservices.

Responsibilities - Take ownership of backend development on the core Symfony application, becoming fully independent within 2–3 months of joining. - Drive the migration from Symfony 6.1 to Symfony 7, resolving versioning, compatibility, and legacy issues that are currently blocking the upgrade. - Review and critically assess code written by teammates and AI tools, challenging proposed approaches and validating outputs before they ship. - Improve the platform's performance, scalability, and maintainability so new features can be introduced more safely. - Collaborate across the Angular front end, TypeScript services, and Python AI agents, reading and understanding adjacent codebases even though the role is primarily backend. - Operate with a high level of autonomy while partnering effectively with a distributed team, and follow SOC 2, PII, and security requirements consistently.

Requirements - 8+ years of commercial software engineering experience, including at least 5 years of expert-level PHP development. - 3+ years of recent, advanced commercial experience with Symfony 6.x or 7 (strong senior Laravel experience may be considered where clearly transferable). - 4+ years of advanced experience in backend architecture, system design, and scalability. - 5+ years of advanced MySQL experience covering schema design and query optimisation; deep PostgreSQL or other relational database expertise is also acceptable. - 3+ years of advanced automated testing with PHPUnit, plus at least 1 year of intermediate experience with framework upgrades and modernising legacy codebases. - 2+ years of advanced AWS experience and at least 1 year of working familiarity with Angular/TypeScript (React or Vue with TypeScript may be considered). - 2+ years of advanced, critical use of AI development tools, including reviewing, validating, and challenging AI-generated code rather than accepting it at face value. - Fluent written and spoken English, ability to work UK hours, eligibility to work in the country of application without employer sponsorship, and willingness to complete background checks.

Nice to have - 2+ years of intermediate CI/CD experience with GitHub Actions (GitLab CI, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps also acceptable). - Basic experience with Amazon Redshift or other data warehousing platforms such as Snowflake or BigQuery. - Azure exposure alongside AWS, or prior mentoring and technical leadership experience with other engineers.
