Senior Java Developer (Platform Modernization)
Job details
About this role
Role overview A senior backend engineer is needed to help modernize a large, business-critical operational platform that combines legacy Java/Spring code, Oracle databases, and partially manual operational workflows. The role is hands-on implementation within a small senior team that leans heavily on AI-assisted development. The goal is to rebuild the system as a modern, cloud-native stack with PostgreSQL and Databricks, while keeping the existing operation running without interruption.
Responsibilities - Design and build backend services in Java and Spring Boot, covering domain modeling, business rules, and persistence layers - Re-implement business logic extracted from legacy Java/Spring code and Oracle PL/SQL into clean, well-tested services that preserve behavioral parity - Shape the PostgreSQL data layer, including schema design, JPA/Hibernate mappings, versioned migrations (Flyway or Liquibase), and query performance tuning - Develop Oracle-to-PostgreSQL data migration and reconciliation tooling that supports parallel run and a safe cutover - Build contract-first REST APIs (OpenAPI) consumed by operational portals and integrated systems - Implement asynchronous, message-driven integrations with retries, idempotency, and error handling - Deliver operational data feeds into Databricks in collaboration with data engineers - Write unit, contract, and integration tests using JUnit and Testcontainers, and keep the codebase production-ready - Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and Azure deployments across DEV, TEST, and PROD - Add observability through structured logging, monitoring, and alerting, and take part in production-readiness and troubleshooting work - Partner with the Business Analyst/Product Owner on user stories, acceptance criteria, and team code reviews
Requirements - 5+ years of commercial Java backend development, with hands-on coding as the primary recent activity - Strong proficiency in Java (5+) and Spring Boot, plus the wider Spring ecosystem - Solid relational database skills in PostgreSQL and Oracle, including SQL, JPA/Hibernate, schema migrations, performance tuning, and the ability to read PL/SQL - Experience reading, refactoring, and migrating legacy codebases safely - Track record building REST APIs and asynchronous message-driven integrations (Kafka, Azure Service Bus, RabbitMQ, or IBM MQ) - Working knowledge of Azure services and containerization with Docker and Kubernetes - Strong testing discipline across unit, integration, and contract tests - Experience with business-critical, high-availability systems where reliability and correctness matter - Comfort using AI coding assistants or agentic workflows as part of day-to-day delivery - Pragmatic, get-it-built attitude and clear communication in English
Nice to have - Familiarity with Spring Security and Spring Integration
Benefits and work setup - Access to training materials and certification programs through partnerships with major data and AI platform vendors - Team-building events and an integration budget - Recognition of work anniversaries, birthdays, and milestones - Medical and sports packages, eye care, and well-being support, including psychotherapy and coaching - Full work equipment provided for productive delivery - Support to build a personal brand through conference speaking, blog writing, or meetups - Structured onboarding with a dedicated buddy in a friendly, supportive, and autonomous culture
