Senior/Staff Frontend Engineer

Role overview

A public-sector frontend engineering role focused on shipping accessible features for a high-traffic government website that millions of Veterans rely on to apply for benefits, manage health care, and track claims. The position supports both senior and staff levels, calibrated during the interview process based on prior scope and impact. Work centers on a substantial, long-lived React codebase that needs both incremental feature delivery and forward-looking modernization.

Responsibilities

- Build and ship user-facing features in a large React-based frontend, treating modern patterns (function components, hooks, TypeScript) as the default rather than the goal - Lead or contribute to migrations that move older class components and Redux patterns toward current standards - Compose interfaces from a shared design system so every experience stays consistent, responsive, and conforms to WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 - Integrate against REST APIs served by an internal platform, handling loading, error, and offline states honestly - Strengthen test coverage across component and browser-level end-to-end layers, leaving suites faster and more trustworthy - Review code, improve CI feedback loops, and share context generously with a distributed team - At the staff level, set technical direction across teams, mentor senior engineers, and drive migrations that outlast any single feature

Requirements

- Deep experience building production React applications with modern patterns as a baseline - Fluency in TypeScript and current JavaScript tooling - A track record of shipping accessible interfaces, treating accessibility as a requirement rather than cleanup - Experience integrating with and debugging against REST APIs - Strong testing instincts across unit, component, and end-to-end layers - Comfort with Git-based collaboration, code review, and CI on GitHub - Clear written communication in a remote, distributed team - For staff level, a history of leading architecture decisions and raising the engineering bar beyond your own commits

Nice to have

- Familiarity with the US Web Design System or another mature design system - Experience with Playwright or Cypress at scale - Civic-tech frontend experience on a large public-sector codebase - Federal delivery experience, including working under a Public Trust
