Role overview
Maintain the stability, performance, and recoverability of operational databases supporting a hospital’s Epic environment. This hands-on administrator role covers production and nonproduction systems running on InterSystems IRIS, with responsibility for routine operations, controlled changes, incident response, and recovery readiness.
Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and maintain operational database environments for production, testing, training, and disaster recovery; carry out approved refreshes and maintenance. - Monitor database growth, storage, resource use, and alerts, using Epic monitoring tools to identify and address risks. - Validate backups, journaling, and recovery procedures, and take part in high-availability and disaster recovery exercises. - Implement upgrades and database changes through change control, including testing, validation, and rollback planning. - Diagnose production incidents, coordinate with application and vendor support teams, and communicate impact and restoration progress. - Improve repeatable operations through automation, runbooks, configuration records, capacity planning, and investigation of recurring issues.
Requirements
- At least three years of direct Epic operational database administration experience in a hospital or health system, including live production responsibility. - Current Epic Operational Database Administration certification and required ongoing education or release maintenance. - Hands-on administration of InterSystems IRIS supporting Epic, including performance troubleshooting, backup checks, and recovery. - Linux or Unix administration and shell scripting skills, plus experience with Epic monitoring and administration tools. - Experience handling production incidents and performing controlled maintenance in a hospital setting. - Strong documentation, communication, and prioritization skills, working independently and with technical teams.
Nice to have
- Experience with large or multisite hospital environments, Epic implementations or major upgrades, and administrative automation. - Familiarity with cloud technologies.
