Senior Manager, Back End Engineering [Remote-US]

Role overview A remote (US) Senior Manager of Back End Engineering opportunity leading a team responsible for the core policy, billing, and financial ledger platforms that power key insurance product and operational initiatives. The role blends people leadership with technical and architectural guidance, partnering across product, program management, and engineering leadership to align execution with business goals.

Responsibilities

- Coach, lead, and develop a team of mid-level, senior, and staff software engineers. - Provide architectural guidance and steer technical decision-making for back end systems. - Partner with product management, program management, and cross-company teams to drive successful product delivery. - Improve engineering processes to increase team efficiency and effectiveness. - Set and manage expectations with senior leadership and external stakeholders. - Drive team performance against KPIs spanning throughput, product quality, security, and performance. - Lead sprint and roadmap planning, capacity modeling, and resourcing efforts. - Stay current on industry trends and champion adoption of engineering best practices.

Requirements

- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. - 8–10 years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years of engineering management. - Experience with personnel development and performance management. - Project management experience, including sprint and roadmap planning, capacity modeling, and resourcing. - Strong technical architecture fluency with a focus on back end systems. - Strong enterprise partnership and stakeholder management skills. - Executive-ready written communication skills.

Nice to have

- Experience in a financial sector such as insurance, banking, or investing. - Experience with AI-assisted engineering practices, including spec-driven development, context engineering, and autonomous agentic workflows. - Familiarity with Go, Python, TypeScript, GraphQL, gRPC, Postgres, Mongo, Snowflake, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS.
