Staff Software Engineer (Authentication)
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Step into a Staff-level individual contributor role on the Authentication team, setting technical direction for the cloud services and infrastructure that back an enterprise identity platform. The position leads the team through its ongoing cloud migration, driving multi-quarter initiatives that improve reliability, scalability, performance, and security. You will operate beyond any single service or sprint, shaping architecture and resolving systemic risk while partnering with engineering leadership, product, test, and research.
Responsibilities
- Define and evolve the technical strategy and architectural direction for authentication cloud services across multiple subsystems. - Lead ambiguous, high-impact initiatives from problem framing and design through implementation, rollout, and operational follow-through, primarily in Go and Python. - Set technical standards and reusable patterns for cloud-native services on AWS and GCP, including Kinesis, DynamoDB, and S3, with focus on reliability, scale, and secure production operation. - Make and communicate consequential tradeoffs involving reliability, scalability, latency, security, cost, and time to market. - Anticipate systemic risks, identify architectural gaps, and drive mitigation before they affect customers or delivery velocity. - Lead technical reviews, facilitate alignment on complex design decisions, and guide migration strategies and ownership boundaries. - Participate in incident response and translate operational learnings into durable improvements in alerting, runbooks, deployment quality, and service ownership using modern observability tooling. - Raise team effectiveness through mentorship, code reviews, and hands-on technical guidance, and share in the on-call rotation as distributed support expands.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience leading complex technical initiatives end to end, with strong judgment on performance, scale, and security. - Deep hands-on background with Go or Python on cloud-native platforms, including AWS services such as Kinesis, DynamoDB, and S3. - Systems-thinking mindset that connects architectural decisions to customer impact, business priorities, and long-term engineering health. - Track record of leading complex technical discussions, creating alignment, and influencing without formal authority. - Comfort operating in ambiguity, making progress with incomplete information, and adapting direction as evidence evolves. - Clear communication of system behavior, tradeoffs, risks, and decisions to engineers, product, and cross-functional partners.
Benefits and work setup
- Remote-first environment with regular in-person team on-sites and company-wide events. - Compensation package including restricted stock units for all employees. - Unlimited paid time off and company-wide rest days. - Generous health, dental, vision, life, and disability plans with strong HSA contributions. - Paid parental leave, plus a year of diaper delivery for new parents. - 401(k) match, identity protection, employee assistance, and enhanced fertility and GLP-1 benefits. - Recurring monthly phone and internet allowance and an annual learning and development stipend.
