Role overview
Lead the production of federal species range maps for a high-priority data integration program supporting Endangered Species Act research. The work unifies marine and anadromous species data into an existing terrestrial and freshwater platform, producing range maps that meet federal standard operating procedures and government sign-off.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end range map production for marine and anadromous taxa in compliance with the FWS Range Mapping Standard Operating Procedure - Aggregate and normalize range data from cloud platform outputs with CRS transformations and spatial format standardization - Validate spatial intersects against authoritative geographic layers, accounting for dynamic habitat boundaries and overlapping Critical Habitat designations - Facilitate iterative review cycles with federal Ecological Services and Fisheries subject matter experts, incorporating feedback into revised map versions - Produce QA documentation for each range map ensuring acceptance criteria are met before submission - Coordinate formal sign-off on the Range Map Set deliverable - Support development of updated range maps during operational handoff
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree with eight years of professional experience, or equivalent combinations of advanced degrees and experience - US citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance; all work performed within the United States - Extensive GIS experience focused on species range mapping or federal environmental applications - Direct experience with FWS Range Mapping SOP or equivalent federal range mapping standards - Proficiency with ArcGIS, QGIS, or equivalent GIS platforms and with Python (including ArcPy or equivalent scripting libraries) - Proficiency in SQL for querying and validating spatial data within cloud platforms - Experience with CRS transformations, spatial data normalization, spatial intersect validation, and Critical Habitat analysis - Strong QA documentation skills for geospatial deliverables
Nice to have
- Experience with NOAA Fisheries marine or anadromous species range data - Familiarity with Databricks or other cloud data platforms for spatial retrieval - Experience coordinating formal government deliverable approvals - GISP certification or equivalent
