Role overview
This position delivers outside plant (OSP) engineering for telecommunications networks, supporting design, documentation, permitting, and construction readiness for aerial, underground, buried, conduit, fiber, and copper infrastructure. The engineer works alongside project management, construction, permitting, utility coordination, and other stakeholders to produce accurate, constructible designs that move cleanly from planning through closeout.
Responsibilities
- Develop and update OSP engineering designs, construction work prints, routing plans, splicing information, bills of materials, and supporting documentation - Support work-order engineering covering road moves, relocations, network modifications, and new construction - Review proposed routes for constructability, capacity, clearances, existing infrastructure, and potential conflicts, recommending practical engineering solutions - Perform or review field surveys for pole lines, conduit systems, buried facilities, and proposed OSP routes, and prepare redlines and as-builts - Prepare permit packages for municipal, county, state, utility, and other authorities, and support right-of-way, easement, and joint-use activities - Maintain accurate project and engineering information across client databases and tracking systems, and run QA/QC reviews on engineering packages
Requirements
- Strong working knowledge of OSP engineering principles, construction methods, and field conditions for aerial, underground, and buried telecom infrastructure - Familiarity with applicable codes and industry standards (such as NESC) used in outside plant design - Experience with CAD, GIS, mapping, drafting, and electronic markup tools used for OSP engineering - Ability to coordinate across project management, construction, permitting, vendors, and utility stakeholders - Experience supporting projects from initial engineering and field validation through permitting, construction release, and closeout - Attention to detail and the ability to manage engineering documentation throughout the full project lifecycle
Nice to have
- Previous engineering experience with a major telecommunications carrier or large-scale OSP programs - Familiarity with fiber and copper loss-budget calculations, splicing schematics, and network-design considerations
