Engineering Manager
Job details
About this role
Role overview
An engineering team at a learning and workforce-development organization is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a pod of four or more engineers building the platform that powers its learning products. The position blends people leadership with technical direction, requiring someone who can coach engineers, set roadmap and architecture for a domain, and champion AI-enabled development practices within the team. It is a remote role reporting to senior engineering leadership.
Responsibilities
- Manage a team of four or more engineers end-to-end, running one-on-ones, growth plans, performance reviews, compensation recommendations, and candid feedback cycles. - Own hiring in partnership with recruiting: scope roles, run interview loops, evaluate candidates, and shape decisions that build a healthy, well-structured team. - Develop engineering talent through mentoring, pairing, design feedback, and code review, with particular attention to growing more junior engineers. - Define and own the team's roadmap and technical direction, translating company strategy into sequenced, well-scoped initiatives and managing timelines and risk. - Guide the team through ambiguous, broadly scoped work such as major refactors and new services, driving complex problems to resolution using both established and new techniques. - Operate production systems responsibly by participating in on-call, using observability tooling, and partnering on security and compliance (e.g., SOC2, vulnerability management, authentication).
Requirements
- Four or more years of professional software engineering experience with deep proficiency in at least one technical area and working range across others. - Two or more years leading or mentoring engineers as a team lead, tech lead, or engineering manager, with a demonstrated record of developing talent. - Proven ownership of the technical design and delivery of broadly scoped work end-to-end, such as a major refactor or a new service. - Strong understanding of scalability best practices and experience designing solutions that handle significant growth. - Familiarity with modern web stacks including Ruby on Rails, React, JavaScript or TypeScript, Python, Docker, PostgreSQL, and AWS. - Comfort with infrastructure automation, platform security, DevOps practices, and operating production systems that hold customer data.
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience with modern AI-enabled development tools and agentic engineering workflows, and a track record of responsibly driving AI adoption on a team. - Practical experience with security and compliance in a SaaS environment, including SOC2, vulnerability management, and authentication systems.
Benefits and work setup
- Remote-first culture with a transparent, social working environment and fast learning cycles. - Competitive salary with geographic tiers ranging from approximately $128K–$202K depending on location. - 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee, with 50% coverage for partner, spouse, and dependents. - Health flexible spending account, employee assistance program, and free access to wellbeing apps. - Flexible paid time off, 13 paid holidays, and generous paid parental leave. - 100% company-paid short- and long-term disability insurance and life insurance, plus optional supplemental life coverage. - 401(k), annual professional development budget, company-provided laptop, and discounted pet insurance.
