Staff Engineer

Role overview A growing cloud-based SaaS company serving small and midsize businesses with payroll, HR, and benefits software is hiring a full-stack Staff Engineer to advance its core payroll platform. The role blends hands-on feature development with architectural decision-making, DevOps contributions, and close partnership with product leaders and customer-facing teams. It suits a senior engineer who enjoys regulated domain work, mentoring peers, and shaping both code and team process in a fast-moving environment.

Responsibilities - Design and deliver features and enhancements for core payroll products in collaboration with product and engineering leadership. - Partner with customer experience teams to troubleshoot issues and ensure solutions meet real-world business needs. - Identify and resolve architectural and technical trade-offs, documenting systems and decisions for peers. - Balance feature delivery with technology improvements, including contributions to DevOps and infrastructure processes. - Write unit tests, follow security and performance standards, and participate in an on-call rotation for production support. - Mentor teammates, lead larger refactors or upgrades, and introduce new technologies through research and proofs of concept.

Requirements - 7+ years of relevant software engineering experience. - Hands-on experience with PHP and willingness to help shape the direction of an existing PHP codebase. - Background with React, Docker, MySQL, Mongo, and Redis, along with tools such as JIRA, Confluence, GitHub, and Jenkins. - Strong cloud infrastructure and DevOps experience, including working with AWS or GCP on Linux systems. - Methodical attention to detail suited to regulated domains such as payroll, with familiarity in software testing best practices. - Ability to balance business needs, technical priorities, and customer needs while communicating trade-offs clearly.

Nice to have - Prior experience with payroll or HRIS products and familiarity with applicable laws and regulations. - Experience with Go alongside the primary PHP stack.

Benefits and work setup - Remote-first within the U.S., with an optional hybrid presence at an Atlanta headquarters. - Base salary range of $145,000–$195,000, plus bonus and stock options. - Four weeks of PTO plus paid holidays, medical/dental/vision coverage, short- and long-term disability, life insurance, fertility benefits, parental leave, and a 401(k) with company match.
