Staff Engineer

Role overview

A cloud-based payroll, HR, and benefits software company serving small and mid-sized employers is hiring a Staff Engineer to advance its core payroll platform. The role partners closely with product, engineering leadership, and customer experience teams to shape feature direction, troubleshoot live customer issues, and influence architecture, DevOps, and infrastructure practices. Responsibilities

- Partner with product and engineering leadership to plan new features and enhancements for core payroll products - Work directly with customer experience teams to troubleshoot ongoing customer issues and ensure solutions address real business needs - Collaborate with peers to evaluate architectural decisions, resolve technical trade-offs, and document software systems for shared understanding - Balance feature delivery with technology improvements, including shaping DevOps and infrastructure processes - Write unit tests, follow coding standards that guard against security and performance issues, and participate in on-call rotation and production support - Mentor teammates, share feedback openly, research emerging technologies through proofs of concept, and drive process improvements across the team

Requirements

- 7+ years of relevant full-stack engineering experience - Hands-on PHP experience and willingness to shape the direction of an existing PHP codebase - Experience with React, Docker, MySQL, MongoDB, and Redis - Working knowledge of AWS or GCP, MySQL, Mongo, and Linux environments - Strong background in cloud infrastructure and DevOps processes - Methodical attention to detail with the ability to balance business needs, technical priorities, and customer requirements

Nice to have

- Prior experience in payroll, HRIS, or related domains - Familiarity with JIRA, Confluence, GitHub, and Jenkins - Experience leading larger refactors, system upgrades, or production monitoring against SLAs
