Role overview

A remote Lead Engineer role for a product suite that powers online higher-education programs, based in South Africa. Responsibilities

- Partner with technology leadership on hiring recommendations, resource allocation, and project prioritization - Collaborate with product management to define and prioritize enterprise-level features - Define and document organization-wide engineering policies, standards, and best practices - Design and implement agentic systems that integrate with existing products, including the strategic use of AI engineering tools - Lead quality and reliability improvements through code review, automated testing, and continuous integration - Mentor and line-manage engineers, providing day-to-day support, technical guidance, and career development - Drive the product suite toward scalable, serverless-first infrastructure patterns

Requirements

- 5–8 years of professional experience across multiple core programming languages and related frameworks - Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience - Hands-on capability with AI engineering tools, plus experience designing agentic systems using frameworks such as LangGraph, LangChain, LangFuse, or the OpenAI Agents SDK - Proficiency with web technologies including Python, Node.js, React, Bootstrap, Ant Design, SSO, and AWS AppSync (GraphQL) - Cloud experience with AWS services such as EC2, Lambda, SNS, and API Gateway, plus databases including PostgreSQL and Aurora - Strong communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills, with a proven track record of agile product delivery - Must be legally authorized to live and work in South Africa and maintain residency there for the duration of employment
