Software Engineer - Build Partner

Role overview

A boutique data and AI advisory focused on private-equity-backed operating companies is hiring a remote, contract software engineer to serve as the dedicated build partner across multiple client engagements. The work centers on translating architecture designs into production software that powers real day-to-day operations, not prototypes. The position is hands-on, with the engineer shipping, owning, and supporting live systems used by operators in lower-middle-market businesses.

Responsibilities

- Build pricing engines that normalize inconsistent vendor data into a single automated price - Develop quote and ordering tools that draw from a shared pricing layer for both web and manual workflows - Construct scheduled ingestion pipelines that pull from vendor portals, APIs, and file drops, including change tracking - Deliver internal operational software such as margin reconciliation, order tracking, and branded PDF and Excel document generation - Integrate with platforms operators already rely on, including e-commerce, accounting, and CRM systems - Collaborate with non-technical stakeholders to convert operational requirements into working technical solutions

Requirements

- Solid foundation in computer science fundamentals including algorithms, data structures, and systems design - Track record of delivering production-grade applications using Python and cloud-deployed services - Hands-on back-end experience building APIs, services, and third-party integrations - Proficiency with object-oriented programming and clean, modular code practices - Experience with databases, data modeling, and data pipelines for analytics or reporting - Comfort with fast-paced, pilot-style environments featuring rapid iteration and direct customer interaction - Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent practical experience - Familiarity with modern development practices including version control, testing, and CI/CD

Nice to have

- Familiarity with GCP services such as BigQuery, Cloud Run, and Firebase - Experience with Shopify, SQL, REST APIs, Git, dbt, and modern front-end frameworks - Skill in orchestrating AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, and other open-source assistants within daily engineering workflows
