About this role

Role overview

Lead a software engineering squad as a hands-on player-coach, guiding delivery while staying close to design discussions, code reviews, architecture, and occasional implementation. The team develops network-management and observability software across open-source, source-available, and proprietary products. The role emphasizes decisive execution, strong engineering practices, direct coaching, and collaboration with product leaders, peer managers, and an external technical community.

Responsibilities

- Lead the team’s day-to-day work, review code and designs, and contribute directly when needed to unblock delivery or demonstrate good practices. - Turn ambiguous objectives into executable plans, establish sprint goals, remove obstacles, and maintain accountability for deadlines. - Own the software lifecycle from planning and design through implementation, testing, release, and follow-up improvement. - Facilitate effective planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and work breakdown using collaborative development and project-management tools. - Promote secure, modern development practices while maintaining a high quality bar and practical delivery pace. - Partner with product managers to convert customer and community needs into shippable plans and challenge scope or timelines when evidence warrants it. - Coach engineers through timely feedback, career development, technical mentoring, and hiring preparation. - Coordinate with engineering leadership and peer managers, communicate risks early, and support contributors and community-facing initiatives where relevant.

Requirements

- At least 2 years as an Engineering Manager or Team Lead, preferably in a role that included regular coding or pull-request review. - Demonstrated success completing projects under tight timelines with a strong focus on action and removing blockers. - Technical depth sufficient to review architecture and code and build credibility with experienced engineers. - Experience with Agile practices, DevOps, and continuous integration and delivery in a fast-moving environment. - Familiarity with GitHub for source control, project tracking, and team collaboration. - Understanding of software security principles and a proven ability to coach engineers. - Direct, effective communication skills suited to remote and asynchronous work.

Nice to have

- Experience with open-source development, community engagement, or the networking industry. - Familiarity with Python, Django, Go, gRPC, OpenTelemetry, cloud services, containers, Kubernetes, or data-privacy compliance.

Benefits and work setup

- The source describes a remote, async-first environment and an equal-opportunity workplace with accommodations available during hiring.
