About this role
Role overview A healthcare technology startup is hiring a Product Engineer to own a product surface end to end, from problem discovery through shipping and measurement, including the underlying API. The team is small, with no dedicated product management or design layer, so the engineer partners directly with clinicians, coordinators, and operators to shape what gets built. The stack centers on Python with FastAPI on AWS Fargate, Postgres on RDS, React with TypeScript on the front end, and AI features through Bedrock, all running on AWS.
Responsibilities - Take ownership of a real market problem and run it from discovery through the shipped experience and the metrics that follow, including the supporting API. - Shape product direction alongside clinicians and operators, starting from one-pagers and conversations rather than a groomed backlog of tickets. - Migrate workflows off legacy systems such as Salesforce, deciding what existing behavior carries forward into the new surface. - Design and prototype interfaces for users who range from nurse practitioners on a tablet in a living room to coordinators juggling nine open tabs. - Apply strong judgment around regulated data: protected health information, access control, and anything a clinician acts on, since compliance does not bend to timelines. - Build daily using agentic coding tools, contributing to team practices for where AI helps and where humans take the wheel.
Requirements - At least four years shipping user-facing product in a startup or similarly fast-moving environment. - Depth in either TypeScript and React or Python, with working competence across the other half of the stack. - Demonstrated product taste, including a portfolio example of an interface designed for real users, not only implemented. - Comfort operating within AWS, ideally in environments governed by HIPAA, or a credible plan to get there quickly. - Strong written communication, since requirements arrive as one-pagers and the engineer is expected to write clearly for both code and documentation. - A portfolio piece that the team will read before the resume, such as a built product, a teardown, or a side project with notes on a defended decision and one to revisit.
Nice to have - Prior experience with LLM-powered features, offline-first design, EHR integrations, or mobile. - Healthcare data literacy or a clear ability to learn concepts like care gaps and PHI implications within weeks.
