Role overview

The Software Engineer III develops and maintains full-stack applications and services that support operational workflows for genetic laboratory testing. Working with engineering partners, operational users, and other stakeholders, this role turns complex requirements into dependable, extensible tools while helping improve development practices and software quality.

The position regularly handles protected health information in paper and electronic form, so careful adherence to privacy, security, and compliance procedures is part of the work.

Responsibilities

- Make design and implementation decisions as part of a collaborative engineering team. - Work directly with stakeholders and users to understand workflows and translate needs into reliable applications. - Design, build, test, maintain, and improve sustainable full-stack software. - Develop services and data workflows using APIs, relational databases, messaging, and workflow orchestration. - Improve engineering processes, promote best practices, and contribute to automated testing and delivery. - Complete required privacy, security, and policy training and maintain compliance with applicable handling procedures for protected health information.

Requirements

- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a comparable discipline, or equivalent experience; a master’s degree is preferred. - At least five years of professional software development experience. - Strong experience with Java, Spring Boot, SQL, REST API design, and relational databases. - Demonstrated teamwork, analytical ability, and clear written and verbal communication. - Familiarity with containerized and cloud-native delivery practices, including Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD tools. - Experience with automated testing and source-control collaboration, including JUnit, Testcontainers, Git, and code review workflows.

Nice to have

Experience with Spring Framework or Hibernate, modern JavaScript frameworks, healthcare IT, Temporal, Kafka, schema registries, MySQL, Liquibase, OpenAPI, Selenium, Cucumber, or AI-assisted development tools is beneficial. A commitment to inclusive collaboration and diversity in engineering is also valued.
