Staff Designer, Rapid Prototyping

Role overview

This senior design-engineering role shapes the user experience of an open-source AI client as it evolves from early prototyping into enterprise-ready product. The position blends product design, front-end engineering, and AI-assisted development, with the expectation of working directly in the codebase rather than producing static mockups. It is a remote, full-time staff-level opportunity focused on building reusable interaction patterns and shipped features for AI chat, search, research, workflow automation, and knowledge retrieval.

Responsibilities

- Build functional prototypes and product experiments directly in the application codebase. - Translate ambiguous product concepts, partner feedback, and enterprise requirements into usable workflows and shipped experiences. - Define interaction patterns for AI-powered chat, search, research, automation, knowledge retrieval, and administrative interfaces. - Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate prototyping while protecting quality, accessibility, security, and maintainability. - Partner with product, engineering, design, and enterprise-facing teams to validate direction and refine the user experience. - Contribute production-quality front-end code and help develop reusable components and design-system elements.

Requirements

- 10+ years of experience in design engineering, front-end engineering, UX engineering, or product design with deep technical implementation skills. - Strong front-end skills with modern JavaScript or TypeScript and component-based frameworks, including direct work inside an application codebase. - Demonstrated product and interaction design judgment across usability, accessibility, information architecture, workflow design, and product polish. - Experience designing or prototyping AI-enabled experiences such as chat, search, agents, automation, or knowledge tools where trust, context, and human oversight are central. - Track record of turning ambiguous concepts into shipped product while balancing speed, quality, maintainability, and risk. - Leadership through mentoring, reusable patterns, cross-functional coordination, or project ownership beyond individual deliverables. - Portfolio showing design-to-code execution, interactive prototypes, or meaningful product experience improvements.

Nice to have

- Background in enterprise software, developer tools, productivity tools, collaboration tools, or self-hosted technical workflows. - Contributions to design systems, component libraries, or shared front-end architecture. - Familiarity with user research, usability testing, or rapid experimentation methods. - Experience contributing to open-source or highly collaborative engineering environments.
