Sr. Staff Software Engineer, Browser (New Products)
Job details
About this role
Role overview Explore new uses for browser technology through hands-on investigation and implementation in browser engine code. This senior individual contributor role combines systems engineering, rapid prototyping, and careful measurement to determine which ideas improve browser behavior and can inform future technical direction.
Responsibilities - Design and implement experiments in browser engine subsystems, examining effects on performance, correctness, and developer-facing interfaces. - Evaluate ways to represent and expose browser state, including tradeoffs in accuracy, complexity, and compatibility with dynamic sites. - Prototype engine capabilities for programmatic interaction with web content, accounting for document structure, layout, navigation, and events. - Instrument and test repeatable tasks; measure results, isolate causes, document unsuccessful as well as successful approaches, and check whether improvements generalize. - Profile added overhead and optimize where evidence supports it; use AI tools to assist coding and analysis, then verify results through debugging and measurement.
Requirements - Deep practical experience in at least one browser engine area, such as DOM and web APIs, rendering, accessibility, JavaScript runtimes, networking, or process architecture. - Strong C++ or Rust skills and experience working in a large systems codebase, including memory ownership, concurrency, object lifetimes, and performance debugging. - Ability to investigate unfamiliar code, form and test hypotheses, build prototypes, and interpret results amid workload or website variability. - Strong understanding of web platform behavior and compatibility across scripting, rendering, document structure, and user interaction. - Experience with profiling, tracing, regression or conformance testing, and scripting tools for measurement.
Benefits and work setup - Remote role. Listed US annual hiring ranges vary by location tier: $166,000–$260,000. - Benefits include health coverage, retirement contributions, paid parental leave, holidays, wellness days and stipends, a home office stipend, and a professional development budget. Some benefits vary by country.
