Senior Staff Data Engineer

Role overview This is a senior technical leadership role on a data engineering team that powers analytics, machine learning, and product insights for a large consumer software platform. The position blends hands-on data engineering with platform engineering responsibilities, helping to design and evolve the systems that process tens of terabytes of data daily. The work directly influences product and business decisions across multiple product lines.

Responsibilities

- Design, build, and continuously improve data pipelines that reliably process tens of terabytes per day - Evaluate and adopt new data technologies while setting engineering best practices across the team - Build and refine workflows on Google Cloud Platform using tools such as Dataflow, BigQuery, Pub/Sub, GKE, and Airflow - Lead cross-functional projects with partners in Data Science, Product, Legal, Policy, and Engineering - Mentor teammates and raise engineering standards across the broader data organization - Collaborate with Data Science to design useful data abstractions and support active data products

Requirements

- 10 or more years of combined experience in Data Engineering, Data Platform Engineering, Data Science, or Data Analyst roles - Deep expertise across both data engineering and data platform engineering disciplines - Hands-on experience with cloud data tooling in GCP, AWS, or Azure, including Pub/Sub, BigQuery, and Dataflow (Apache Beam) or comparable technologies - Familiarity with Looker, Fivetran, Kubernetes/GKE, Airflow/Cloud Composer, and Terraform or similar tools - Advanced coding skills in SQL and Python - Strong software engineering fundamentals, including modularity, abstraction, data structures, and algorithms - Prior experience as a tech lead, team lead, or hands-on data engineering manager
