About this role
Role overview A cloud database engineering role supporting the relational data tier behind a high-volume card issuing and payments platform that processes billions of transactions annually. The position is part of a Cloud Platform team focused on automating database lifecycle, partnering with application teams on performance, and building highly available, multi-region data infrastructure.
Responsibilities - Automate the lifecycle of managed relational database instances, including provisioning, scaling, backup, and recovery. - Design and improve high availability and disaster recovery patterns across availability zones and regions. - Partner with application engineers to analyze query and instance performance, then drive remediation. - Modernize database architecture to increase reliability, resilience, and scalability. - Lead root cause analysis after incidents, document findings, and ship follow-up improvements. - Contribute to long-term technical direction alongside peers across multiple engineering teams.
Requirements - Three or more years of experience as a backend engineer working with production database systems. - Strong familiarity with managed cloud database services, particularly AWS Aurora or comparable engines. - Solid grasp of high availability, disaster recovery, and multi-region architectural patterns. - Comfort with infrastructure-as-code and a strong automation-first mindset. - Ability to participate in on-call rotation and root cause analysis for database-related incidents.
Nice to have - Experience with both relational and non-relational database technologies. - Background operating platforms with strict uptime targets at significant transaction scale.
