Job details
About this role
Role overview A senior full stack software engineer is needed on a Customer and Cardholder Experiences team that builds user interfaces and embeddable solutions for a modern card-issuing and payments platform. The role owns the delivery of projects tied to quarterly goals, solves ambiguous open-ended problems, and partners closely with product and cross-functional teams. It suits an experienced generalist who can move between front-end and back-end work and lead medium-sized components end to end.
Responsibilities - Design, build, test, and continually improve user interfaces and the backend services that support them. - Define and deliver well-scoped project milestones and act as technical lead for projects on the team. - Translate customer and product stakeholder input into technical solutions that ship value quickly. - Mentor less experienced engineers through code review, craft guidance, and setting a strong technical example. - Write clean, flexible, reusable code with minimal bugs that adapts well to changing requirements. - Identify gaps in the existing system, challenge the status quo, and propose innovative plans to address them. - Lead design for medium components and features, and participate in design for larger ones, moving from task-level to project-level impact. - Take significant ownership of a component or feature area. - Design software components with simplicity and maintainability in mind, ensuring they are testable, debuggable, and have logical APIs. - Participate in on-call coverage.
Requirements - 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience with a bachelor's degree, 3+ years with a master's, or 8+ years with a PhD; in lieu of a degree, 8+ years of relevant experience. - 2+ years of backend experience in any object-oriented programming language. - Experience with OAuth 2.0, JWTs, and user session management. - Experience developing applications with a modern Java backend stack using Spring Boot and Kubernetes on AWS. - Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs. - Experience with JavaScript and Node.js. - Experience developing scalable microservices on AWS (preferred), Azure, or GCP. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail. - Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally and deliver projects. - Experience in modern software engineering ecosystems using CI/CD, containerized apps, and Agile (Scrum). - Willingness to share difficult trade-offs and work with stakeholders to clarify ambiguity.
Nice to have - Domain experience in payments or fintech. - Experience building scalable applications with a modern frontend framework such as React, Angular, Vue, or Next.js. - Experience with highly available distributed systems, including sharding, replication, load balancing, and caching.
Benefits and work setup - Remote-first role performed within the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario. - New-hire base salary range of CAD $116,000–$145,000, with annual performance-based bonuses. - Multiple health insurance options, flexible vacation plus floating holidays, and a retirement savings program with company contribution. - Equity in a publicly traded company, a monthly remote-work stipend, and an annual development stipend. - Family-forming benefits and generous parental leave with base salary top-up.
