About this role

Role overview Own applied machine learning projects for customers in Japan, guiding work from early technical discovery through production deployment. The focus is making models reliable in real operating environments, which may involve inference optimization, evaluation, post-training, and supporting software as well as model integration. You will work with customer engineering teams and collaborate across research, product, and engineering groups.

Responsibilities - Clarify customer needs, scope applied ML projects, and turn requirements into technical plans. - Integrate, profile, and optimize inference to meet targets for latency, throughput, memory, power, cost, and reliability. - Build supporting systems such as data pipelines, evaluation workflows, serving components, and reference implementations. - Adapt or post-train models when the use case calls for it, then validate results with careful evaluation and error analysis. - Share field findings with product and engineering teams and develop reusable deployment approaches. - Travel occasionally within Japan and to the United States or relevant conferences.

Requirements - Ability to lead technical work from discovery and implementation through validation and deployment. - Experience translating ambiguous customer problems into practical engineering plans. - Strong applied ML judgment that accounts for privacy, maintainability, compute, latency, and memory constraints. - A rigorous approach to baselines, profiling, evaluation, and diagnosing errors. - Clear communication and collaboration across customer teams and globally distributed colleagues.

Benefits and work setup Primarily remote for candidates based in Japan, with typical in-person collaboration at a Tokyo office once or twice a week. Working hours are flexible, with coordination across Japan-based customers and colleagues in other time zones. The role offers close collaboration with core research and engineering teams, mentorship and career development, unlimited paid time off, salary, equity, and standard employee benefits in Japan.
