Backend Engineer (Python and SQL)

Role overview We are looking for a long-term contractor Backend Engineer based in Latin America to work fully remotely. The role focuses on designing and maintaining the server-side systems that power data-driven applications, with emphasis on Python services, microservices, and SQL-based analytics. You will collaborate across teams to ship reliable, scalable features that integrate with multiple internal and external data sources.

Responsibilities - Build and maintain server-side applications in Python following established coding standards - Author complex SQL queries using Trino to aggregate analytics data from multiple sources - Develop, test, and operate microservices that make up the core platform - Design, tune, and optimize both relational and non-relational databases - Partner with cross-functional teams to integrate APIs and ensure smooth end-to-end functionality - Write integration tests, perform code reviews, and debug issues across backend systems

Requirements - Professional proficiency in English - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience - Two to four years of professional software engineering experience with a backend focus - Strong proficiency in Python and hands-on experience with SQL and database optimization - Practical experience designing and running microservices architectures - Familiarity with RESTful API design principles and Agile software development lifecycle - Solid problem-solving, debugging, and cross-team collaboration skills

Nice to have - Advanced degree in Computer Science or a related discipline - Certification or hands-on experience with AWS or Google Cloud Platform - Familiarity with Docker and other containerization tooling - Knowledge of message queues and streaming platforms such as Apache Kafka - Experience with caching strategies, performance testing, and profiling tools - Exposure to machine learning concepts and frameworks
