Senior or Staff Software Engineer, Backend
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Design and build the foundational backend services and developer tooling that power a large-scale healthcare experience platform used by tens of millions of people. Working inside a pod-based delivery model, this role owns complex, ambiguous problems across the platform's backend, from service architecture to production reliability. At Senior level the focus is the team's services, and at Staff level it extends across pods, setting architecture direction and mentoring peers platform-wide.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain scalable, resilient backend services and internal developer tooling. - Own outcomes end to end, partnering with Product, Design, and Engineering to shape solutions and carry work from technical design through production delivery and operation. - Lead technical design and planning for platform initiatives, including authoring and reviewing architecture decision records; at Staff level, own architecture direction across multiple pods. - Contribute beyond a primary backend specialization across services, data, infrastructure, web, and mobile codebases when needed to deliver pod outcomes. - Apply AI-assisted engineering practices such as coding agents, multi-agent workflows, and AI-supported planning, testing, debugging, and code review, while remaining accountable for the quality of every change. - Uphold engineering quality through rigorous code review, automated testing, and performance monitoring. - Debug complex production issues, including participating in an on-call rotation. - Mentor and coach engineers; at Staff level, mentor senior engineers and shape standards platform-wide.
Requirements
- 7+ years (Senior) or 10+ years (Staff) of experience building and operating scalable backend software in production, with increasing scope and technical ownership. - Hands-on expertise with Go for backend services, Kubernetes for container orchestration, and Google Cloud Platform. - Experience with MongoDB for data persistence, and with authentication and authorization systems such as OAuth. - Deep understanding of distributed systems, microservices architecture, and API design. - Demonstrated experience building and maintaining automated test suites and driving engineering best practices. - Hands-on use of AI-assisted engineering tools and willingness to stay current as the space evolves.
Nice to have
- Experience applying strong technical judgment on ambiguous problems with minimal guidance and setting direction across pods (Staff level). - Comfort contributing to hiring, cross-pod forums, and representing engineering in cross-functional planning.
Benefits and work setup
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage. - Performance-based bonus program and an employee stock option program. - Unlimited paid time off, wellness days, and tax-advantaged spending accounts. - Mentorship program and abundant opportunities for professional development. - Flexible ways of working, with a mix of office-centric roles in Toronto and remote-eligible roles across Canada or the US; Toronto-area team members collaborate in-office Monday through Thursday, with quarterly flexible remote days.
