Job details
About this role
Role overview A consumer finance company specializing in lease-to-own financing for non-prime consumers is hiring a Senior Vice President of Engineering to lead its entire engineering organization. Reporting to the Chief Product and Technology Officer, the role spans consumer and merchant experience, core engineering, application experience, data and AI platform, and architecture functions. This is a company leadership role, not solely an engineering one, requiring equal credibility in technical architecture discussions and executive strategy sessions. The company expects an active AI practitioner who is already experimenting with frontier models and applying them to real business problems.
Responsibilities - Partner with product, technology, and cross-functional leaders to translate company objectives into engineering strategy, investment priorities, and execution plans - Own engineering delivery outcomes, ensuring teams make realistic commitments, surface risks early, and align on corrective action when delivery is at risk - Contribute to company decisions beyond engineering by connecting technical choices to growth, customer experience, operating efficiency, and risk - Engage deeply in consequential architectural and engineering decisions while delegating clearly to strengthen direct leaders' ownership - Lead, coach, and hold accountable engineering leaders and managers across the organization, investing in succession planning, leadership development, and hiring - Drive AI adoption across engineering and the broader business through practical application, sound judgment, and measurable outcomes rather than superficial tool rollout - Continually evaluate team structure, responsibilities, and leadership capacity to keep the organization operating effectively as it scales
Requirements - Track record of scaling engineering organizations and helping managers develop into stronger leaders, setting a high bar and addressing difficult people decisions with clear accountability - Active AI practitioner with examples of personally built workflows, redesigned processes, or experiments using AI tools, and informed views on capabilities and limitations - Pragmatic and accountable for outcomes, with the ability to balance modernization with delivery, speed with reliability, and ambition with available capacity - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience - Fluency in the modern AI stack, including frontier models, coding agents, and the harnesses, evaluations, and guardrails required to make them reliable in production - Understanding of how the developer workflow is shifting from writing code to designing and supervising agentic loops where agents plan, build, test, and verify work against specifications
Nice to have - Experience in fintech, payments, lending, or other regulated, transaction-intensive environments - Familiarity with customer- and merchant-facing products, servicing platforms, and internal business systems such as Salesforce - Familiarity with technologies including Go, Node.js, React, AWS, Kubernetes, and native iOS and Android development, with strong engineering fundamentals valued over expertise in any single stack
Benefits and work setup Location is flexible across Richmond, VA; Arlington, VA; or fully remote within the United States, with in-office, hybrid, or remote options depending on proximity to offices. Compensation includes a base salary range plus eligibility for a company bonus plan. Additional benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, 20 PTO days plus 11 paid holidays, 401(k) with company match, student loan and tuition reimbursement, commuter assistance, parental leave, and inclusion and engagement programs.
