About this role
Role overview A junior backend engineer is needed to join a small team building AI-powered software for the commercial insurance industry. The work focuses on backend services, data pipelines, and machine-learning infrastructure that support products used by insurance underwriters. It is a hands-on engineering role with production responsibility from day one, well suited to someone with roughly a year of professional experience who wants to grow quickly on hard problems.
Responsibilities - Build and maintain backend services powering AI products for insurance underwriters - Contribute to data and ML pipelines that ingest and process large volumes of structured and unstructured data - Help design, build, test, and operate production systems at scale - Collaborate with full-stack, backend, ML, and platform engineers on a small team - Take ownership of features end to end, from design through deployment - Work on real product and research systems at the intersection of software engineering and applied AI
Requirements - Approximately one year of professional software engineering experience shipping production systems - Strong fundamentals in at least one programming language, with working knowledge of Python - Degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience - Genuine curiosity about AI, data, and real-world applications of machine learning - Comfort working with ambiguity, taking ownership, and moving quickly - Appreciation for direct feedback, meritocracy, and transparency
Nice to have - Exposure to cloud environments, asynchronous workflows, or distributed systems
