Backend Engineer (Europe)

Role overview A fully remote Backend Engineer position based in Europe, focused on building and operating production systems at the crossroads of software engineering and applied AI. The work centers on services, data pipelines, and infrastructure that support commercial insurance underwriting workflows.

Responsibilities - Own backend services end to end, from design through deployment and ongoing maintenance - Build and improve systems that ingest, process, and reason over large volumes of structured and unstructured data, including documents, third-party sources, and model outputs - Develop data-driven microservices using RESTful APIs and asynchronous, event-based patterns - Collaborate with full-stack, ML, and platform engineers on architecture, testing, and operational practices - Shape how services are designed, built, tested, and run reliably at scale

Requirements - Three or more years of professional software engineering experience shipping production systems - Strong Python skills plus solid fundamentals in at least one additional language - Hands-on work with PostgreSQL or comparable relational databases - Practical experience with AWS, including serverless and asynchronous workflows such as Lambda and EC2 - Degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or equivalent practical experience - Curiosity about AI, data, and real-world machine learning applications

Nice to have - Comfort designing and tuning microservices around data-intensive workloads
