Remote job
Staff Software Engineer, Database Platform
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Set technical direction for database architecture and reliability across a platform that handles large volumes of structured security assessment data. This hands-on staff-level role combines production engineering, system design, performance work, and mentorship, while enabling application teams to build safely on shared data stores.
Responsibilities - Establish database design standards for schemas, data models, indexing, and query contracts across teams. - Analyze query plans, resolve performance bottlenecks, and build observability that helps detect regressions. - Own reliability practices for data stores, including replication, failover, backup validation, capacity planning, and incident response. - Design safe schema migration processes, including reversible changes, production testing, and zero-downtime rollout practices. - Advise application teams on schemas, queries, and ORM usage to prevent data-layer issues. - Mentor engineers through design and code reviews, pairing, and guidance on complex database problems.
Requirements - At least eight years of software engineering experience, with deep database systems or data infrastructure specialization. - Expert PostgreSQL skills, including production query tuning, replication, and diagnosing vacuum or locking issues. - Strong understanding of database trade-offs, including normalization, indexing, partitioning, and connection pooling at scale. - Experience designing zero-downtime migrations for high-volume production systems. - Ability to write production code, make architecture decisions, and mentor engineers.
Nice to have
Experience with graph databases and time-series data stores is relevant to the platform’s data needs.
