Staff Software Engineer, Retirement Money Planning

Role overview Own full-stack engineering for tools that help people manage workplace retirement savings, including accounts, contributions, portfolios, and withdrawals. The work combines backend services and APIs with user-facing interfaces, and involves translating complex financial rules into dependable software in partnership with product, design, compliance, and operations teams.

Responsibilities - Design, build, and test experiences for retirement savers using products such as 401(k) plans and IRAs. - Extend existing architecture to support new capabilities and improve foundational systems over time. - Own services and APIs end to end, including production support, debugging, reliability, observability, and operational tooling. - Deliver clear, well-tested code that can ship quickly and scale with product needs. - Work with cross-functional partners to resolve ambiguous problems and represent saver needs in product decisions. - Use AI tools in the engineering workflow and identify opportunities to reduce effort or make retirement decisions easier for users.

Requirements - At least eight years of experience building and shipping production software products or platforms. - Strong experience with backend services, APIs, and message-based systems such as Sidekiq or Kafka. - Professional experience with Ruby on Rails; experience with large modern frontend applications such as React. - Experience with GraphQL and end-to-end ownership, including production operations. - Ability to influence across teams, work closely with product managers and other partners, and communicate clearly. - A pragmatic, delivery-focused approach to engineering.

Benefits and work setup - Cash compensation is listed at $163,000–$204,000 in Denver and $197,000–$247,000 in San Francisco and New York; equity is additional. Final compensation varies based on experience, expertise, and other factors. - Travel to an office for onboarding is required. Employees based near designated offices are expected to work in person on designated days, approximately two to three days per week or more depending on the role.
