Staff Backend Engineer - Grafana Second Horizon
Job details
About this role
Role overview
This Staff Backend Engineer role focuses on building an AI-native context layer that helps people and software agents find, understand, and safely use enterprise data. You will join an autonomous early-stage team and design the first production services for context ingestion, indexing, storage, retrieval, administration, and agent-facing integrations. The work requires comfort with ambiguity, pragmatic architecture, and evolving an internally validated system into a reliable multi-tenant SaaS product.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, test, and operate backend services for context ingestion, indexing, retrieval orchestration, API access, source configuration, and administration. - Establish a scalable SaaS foundation covering tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs, background jobs, and dependable service boundaries. - Build APIs and service interfaces for AI agents, MCP tools, command-line clients, and internal applications to retrieve context, provenance, confidence signals, and warnings. - Make practical tradeoffs between rapid experimentation and long-term reliability as the system moves from prototype to production. - Instrument, monitor, and operate the services you build, taking ownership of their reliability and evolution. - Collaborate closely with product, infrastructure, and engineering partners while validating ideas early and shaping the direction of a new initiative.
Requirements
- Staff-level backend engineering experience and a track record of owning architecture through implementation and production operation. - Strong judgment in ambiguous, early-stage environments where requirements and system boundaries are still developing. - Experience designing reliable backend services and APIs for data-intensive or distributed applications. - Understanding of multi-tenant SaaS concerns such as isolation, quotas, usage measurement, background processing, and auditability. - Ability to balance speed, maintainability, observability, and operational reliability. - Clear, collaborative communication and willingness to make decisions with a high degree of autonomy.
